In Ancient Egypt having a light heart was highly desirable. The goddess Maat was the goddess of balance, harmony, order and truth. She was depicted with a feather on her head (feather of maat). After death, one’s soul was weighed against her feather which was the measure that determined whether the soul’s of the departed would reach paradise successfully. Only if the souls heart was lighter than the feather, would the soul pass on toward the bliss of the Field of Reeds.
